Victory for Seafield Apartment Tenants in Renoviction Case

Tenants of a West End apartment building have scored another victory in their long fight against eviction.

Standing in front of signs that read “justice at last”, the 15 people who call the seafield apartments on pendrell street home are celebrating their latest win. Earlier this week, the residential tenancy branch ruled eviction notices invalid.

“They started by trying to raise our rent by 73 per-cent.  We had to take it to the supreme court.  We won that.  10 days later, suddenly, the building’s in need of repair.”

Tenant Melissa Mewdell says it’s a fight that’s lasted more than two years. She’s calling on the province to close loopholes in the “Residential Tenancy Act”, saying there are no penalties for landlords who abuse the law.
